Celebrating Wales's first Ryder Cup

WEDNESDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2010 | MILLENNIUM STADIUM, CARDIFF

About Wales

Wales isn’t that far from London, but it’s a very different place. It’s part of the UK, but there’s a sense of self that goes back way beyond that Union.

Green and hilly, Wales has its own language (though everyone speaks English too), a distinct Celtic culture and heritage and a national spirit that’s stronger than ever.

The landscape is rarely flat – at around 8000 miles sq Wales is smaller that the US state of Massachusetts (host of the 1st Ryder Cup) – but if you were to roll it out it would be bigger than Texas.

There are three National Parks and five areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (that’s a posh way of saying beautiful landscape – and that’s official). It all comes together to make a playground for hiking, cycling, coasteering (a sport invented in Wales) and of course golf too!

Not that it’s all countryside. The towns and cities should definitely be on your itinerary too. Cardiff, the Capital City is the host venue of the Welcome to Wales Concert, and of course Newport is the host city of The 2010 Ryder Cup.
